Dear Editor,
I felt compelled to write in response to some comments made by Professor Kerwin Swint of Kennesaw State University that appeared on your front page story June 19th. I think it's a sad comment on American politics when University Professors claim that voting your conscience and voting for what you truly believe in is considered "throwing your vote away". Also, Professor Swint clearly shows his lack of understanding of what the Libertarian party truly stands for. Libertarian political philosophy is the philosophy on which this country was founded. In that all men are created equally and that it is not the place of politicians to tell us how to live our lives or who we are going to be forced to give the fruits of our labor to.
Libertarians do not stand for "no government" as Professor Swint states, we recognize the need for government but realize its role should be limited to protecting the rights of individuals and those that can't protect themselves. Professor Swint also shows that he does not have a firm grhtm on logic or reason by his statements that imply that Libertarians are inconsistent because they are like Republicans on one side, and like Democrats on the other. Libertarians are totally consistent because we believe that it's not government's place to tell us how to live our lives fiscally OR personally.
I have more faith in the intelligence of the people of Cobb County than Professor Swint. I am just an average working man of average intelligence and if I can figure out that Democrats and Republicans alike stand for bigger government and more control over the lives of average citizens then surely I'm not alone.
And finally, I didn't know that state university professors were endowed with ESP, as surely Professor Swint is as verified by his statement "The Libertarian party is not going to win any elections in Cobb County any time soon and they know that". Quite the contrary, we have every intention of winning this fall. I might paraphrase former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, (If Republicans fail to follow through on their "Contract with America", Americans are going to turn to third party's in a large way). I am one of those Americans.
