Dear Editor,
Concerning the governor's education reform legislation. While I agree with Governor Barnes on the issue of removing tenure, because in order for teachers to be paid as professionals they must be treated as professionals. It seems to me that many of the governors proposals include spending a whole lot more money and creating another bureaucracy to keep tabs on an already existing bureaucracy that was created to keep tabs on another bureaucracy.
To the best of my knowledge there is no statistic that shows that increased education spending in any way correlates to a more intelligent student body. If the governor wants to spend money to improve education I would far rather see it in the form of a voucher system or in the creation of charter schools, where individual parents, regardless of their income levels, could choose for themselves where their children go to school and what they are taught.
Introducing competition into our school systems is the only way that we can guarantee a consistent rise in the level of our students' education. In all other htmects of consumer product and service purchases increased choice and increased competition create the best product for the least amount of money, is this not self evident, is there even a question to debate here?
I view the governors reform package as simply another way to increase the governments ability to extract from us the citizens more of our hard earned money, while at the same time limiting our choices and subjugating our freedoms.
